ONCE A MOUNTAINEER ALWAYS A MOUNTAINEER

CO-CONTRIBUTOR

My sophomore year I was approached by my professor, Dr.Elizabeth Oppe to help her and a group of notable students on campus raise money, and awareness for her “Once A Mountaineer, Always a Mountaineer” campaign. I was honored and excited to assist with this endeavor, simply because I recalled her speaking about the idea briefly in class, and now it was actually coming to life! I had the pleasure of taking Dr.Oppe’s Journalism 101 class my freshmen year, and really enjoyed how she was able to correlate real world experiences into our education, to better help students understand the points she was trying to make. Unlike most students, I was very excited to attend her class everyday and also further enhanced my intellect by attending her office hours as well outside of class.

The following year, she informed me they were in need of someone who could help them to raise enough money to make the entire program be completely non-profit for the children. Through my experience with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I was aware of what it took, and I confidently accepted the challenge. I worked hard outside of class to network with local businesses and student organizations on campus to help raise money and increase everyone’s awareness. Tickets began to sell left and right, and Dr.Oppe became very pleased with my assistance. I also received the responsibility of helping the executive board with the production of the dinner reception following the “Day of Play” community service event. The “Day of Play” consisted of children receiving the opportunity to engage in physical fitness with their favorite sports player, and promote a healthy and happy lifestyle for them. Following the Day of Play, we hosted a reception to thank and recognize the returning WVU players for their service and commitment to the program.

This community service project was one of the biggest events I had ever been apart of. It definitely helped to pave the way for my future success with non-profits and giving back to the community as well.
